Abstract
Durante las temporadas 2012 a 2016 inclusive (5 años) en que las ballenas francas australes (Eubalaena australis) permanecen en aguas de la Península Valdés, se realizaron 45 censos en total (9 censos/año en promedio) entre los meses de abril y diciembre, desde el Observatorio de ballenas francas de “Punta Flecha” (42º 40´S – 64º 56´O), en las costas del Golfo Nuevo, Provincia de Chubut, Patagonia Argentina. El número total de ballenas tuvo máximos de 91 ejemplares en septiembre de 2012, de 122 en septiembre de 2013, de 203 en agosto de 2014, de 124 en julio de 2015 y de 237 ejemplares en agosto de 2016. El número de madres con crías tuvo máximos de 28 ejemplares (14 madres y sus 14 crías) en septiembre de 2012, de 98 (49 y 49) en septiembre de 2013, de 98 (49 y 49) en agosto de 2014, de 66 (33 y 33) en julio de 2015 y de 160 (80 y 80) en agosto de 2016; coincidiendo con los máximos registrados para el total de ballenas en el área. Los datos confirman que los meses con mayor presencia de ballenas francas en las aguas del Golfo Nuevo, frente al Área Natural Protegida "El Doradillo", abarcan el período de junio-julio a septiembre de cada año (3 a 4 meses); y que esta es un área principalmente seleccionada por las madres para criar a sus ballenatos. During the seasons 2012 through 2016 (5 years) in which the Southern Right Whales (Eubalaena australis) remain in waters of the Península Valdés, 45 censuses were carried out in total (9 censuses/year on average) between the months of April and December, from the observatory of "Punta Flecha" (42º 40´ S - 64º 56´ W), on the coast of the Nuevo gulf, Chubut Province, Patagonia Argentina. The total number of whales counted produced a maximum of 91 individuals in September 2012, 122 in September 2013, 203 in August 2014, 124 in July 2015 and 237 in August 2016. The number of mothers with calves counted had maximums of 28 individuals (14 mothers and 14 calves) in September 2012, of 98 (49 and 49) in September 2013, 98 (49 and 49) in August 2014, 66 (33 and 33) in July 2015 and 160 (80 and 80) in August 2016; coinciding with maximums recorded for the total number of whales in the area. The data confirms that the months with the greatest number of Southern Right whales, in the waters of the Golfo Nuevo adjoining the Natural Protected Area of "El Doradillo", occurs between June-July and September of each year (3-4 months); and that this area is mainly selected by mothers to raise their calves.
