Abstract
We used agroecology concepts as part of the capacity-building courses and environmental education programs in two schools in the Pantanal highlands municipality of Corguinho, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Classes on sustainable production techniques were given to students from 6th to 9th grade. The main objectives were to transfer sustainable land-use techniques to the young and future rural producers: whether property owners or employees. We emphasized the importance of maintaining the ecosystem services for rural livelihoods. The classes were held every 15 days during the semester, 249 students were presented with talks to demonstrate the importance of using natural resources in a sustainable manner and the concept of ecosystem services. We evaluated the status and change of student perceptions through surveys before and three months after our course. There was a significant change in environmental awareness using sustainable land-use agroecological techniques as a tool.
