Abstract
In 1976, when I graduated from high school, change was in the air. It
had nothing to do with the state of democracy, as the US marked its
200th anniversary. Nor was it related to some coming‐of‐age event
that I was experiencing. Rather, carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere
had begun to tip the Earth's thermostat upward. Corals, something
I had never thought about, would become the first mass
casualties.
