Abstract
Christophe Boesch is a primatologist, who has dedicated his career to understanding the behavioral diversity of wild great apes. He and his wife (Hedwige Achermann-Boesch) were among the first scientists to habituate wild chimpanzees to the presence of researchers without provisioning, and their field research in the Taï Forest, Côte d'Ivoire, would continue for more than 40 years. Boesch also made efforts to observe apes at other localities to better understand variation in chimpanzee behavior, and later in his career expanded his fieldwork to include semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers. Boesch was named Director of Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, in 1997. He has authored or edited ten books which have prompted major advancements in understanding chimpanzee society, hunting behavior, technology, and culture. In 2000, he founded the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation which has the mission of enhancing the survival of the remaining wild chimpanzee populations and their habitat throughout tropical Africa.
