Avian community and landscape ecology for conservation

Abstract
Two approaches were used to study the distribution of birds: at the landscape scale and at the species scale. Although birds are particularly mobile taxa, the results indicate that they are influenced by habitat heterogeneity and forest fragmentation. At the landscape scale in fragmented forests, the model shows a system of community nesting or "nestedness". At the species level, the Maxent predictive habitat models based on 11 environmental variables provide a reliable prediction of priority areas for conservation of the threatened species Threskiornis bernieri. These models even help to identify the most important factors for the presence of the species in a given area. The approaches used have applications in the consideration of habitat matrices for bird conservation and the prediction of species status, on which little information exists.
