Abstract
In natural history museums, the Pleistocene era comes alive as guests confront the great woolly mammoth. Yet you need no museum to see another woolly Pleistocene species that shared the Arctic's tundra habitat. With its U-shaped horns and shaggy coat, the muskoxen continues to eke out an existence on the same lichens and grasses of the wind-scoured North that facilitated its survival in the last ice age, helped along by two layers of insulating fur to withstand the cold harsh climate.
