Abstract
People’s beliefs about how natural and social systems function and benefit or detriment different members of society can greatly influence their reasoning, decisions, and willingness to participate in natural resource management. These beliefs and associated values can be more critical than the scientific information itself and yet are seldom a focus of natural resource management scholarship, environmental studies educations, or application to sustainability science. These are impediments when applying potential solutions to environmental and sustainability problems. The seminar will review some recent multicultural studies evaluating the important role psychology plays in influencing perceptions of natural resource stakeholders (see papers below). A proposed framework of how social values and academic disciplines may influence approaches to these problems will be a basis for a group discussion and critique. The seminar will draw on the leaders experience and efforts to achieve sustainable fisheries in African coral reef fisheries.
