Abstract
Reviews the complex ecological and evolutionary factors involved in the social organisation of silverbacked (Canis mesomelas) and golden (C. aureus) jackals in Tanzania. Ecological and physiological constraints select for a monogamous mating system and co-operative rearing of pups. By comparison with other canids, and particularly their feeding ecology, trends that correlated with body weight seem to emerge, and these may provide further insights into jackals' breeding systems. -after Author
