Abstract
Dasht-e Nawar, located in the province of Ghazni in Afghanistan, was known since 1965 to be the highest breeding site in the world for the Greater flamingo. WCS surveys carried out in 2007 and 2009 confirmed for the first time since 1975 that the species still breeds in the area. Monitoring results and local interviews however suggested the numbers of flamingos occurring at this site has decreased markedly, most likely due to excessive diversion of inflowing waters in the main lake for irrigation and other human purposes.
