Abstract
We evaluate the assumptions and parameters applied to the biomass feedstock assessment and examine the ecological sustainability of post-disturbance logging in Yukon forests, in general and in relation to the Morrison-Hershfield proposal. We describe best practices for post-disturbance logging in boreal forests. As many of the assumptions and parameters used for feedstock supply calculations are overly optimistic, underestimates of the cost of low volume stands, long-distance hauling costs, and other challenges may all decrease project viability. We suggest the ecological sustainability of post-disturbance logging must include an assessment of potential cumulative effects of climate change, natural disturbance, and biomass harvest in boreal forests. We also caution that cumulative effects build as logging is added to natural disturbance and as more biomass is removed from the ecosystem.
