Abstract
The Badger-Two Medicine (B2M) area occupies a strategic position in the international landscape known as the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem. The B2M is vital land for several vulnerable species of fish and wildlife that have been vanquished from much of their historical range, and it is sacred land for the Blackfeet people who have hunting, fishing, and other rights reserved in an agreement with the United States in 1895-96. This working paper explores the ecological, cultural, and legal components of B2M to provide useful background and context for the Blackfeet Tribe, the Lewis and Clark National Forest, and others as they consider the future of the B2M. It suggests a co-stewardship framework and different options for protecting the outstanding natural and cultural values of the B2M in a way that encompasses diverse perspectives in a common purpose.
