Abstract
Small mammals, particularly rodents, are important dietary components for small mammalian carnivores in virtually all biomes. The foraging of many of these predators is general in nature, in that they exploit a wide variety of resources and may switch between prey types in order to buffer fluctuations in abundance that inevitably occur. This study evaluates the temporal role of shrews in carnivore diets and how the occurrence of shrews in scats varied in comparison to rodents. It also examines how the abundance of rodents affects the likelihood of including shrews in carnivore diets.
