Abstract
The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is an obligate bamboo grazer that spends much of its day feeding in order to obtain sufficient nutrients through an inefficient digestive process. Little is known of habitat selection by pandas but, based on their dietary requirements, it is likely that pandas select primarily for suitability for foraging. This study examines what habitat characteristics giant pandas select in choosing winter and summer feeding sites in Wolong Reserve, China. It also investigates if pandas selected patches based on their average bamboo or topographic characteristics.
