Abstract
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease cervids which poses a long-term threat to deer and elk populations in North America. Many states and provinces have initiated a variety of CWD surveillance programs but the accuracy of each methodology is unresolved. This study develops an improved statistical method for estimating the probability of detecting early outbreaks of CWD by using data from white-tailed deer harvested by hunters in Wisconsin. It further applies this method to smaller areas within deer management units in Wisconsin to determine distribution of CWD and shape a management response.
