Abstract
A biological inventory of birds (chapter 2) and plants (chapter 3) was undertaken in the Virunga Volcanoes from 10th Jan to 2nd Feb 2004 to provide information on the diversity, abundance and distribution of species found in the area. Emphasis was placed on documenting species that are Albertine Rift Endemics and threatened species to provide information that would allow the development of a zoning plan for the Virunga Volcanoes. The survey also served as a training exercise for the staff of ICCN, ORTPN and DFGFI to help them undertake research and monitoring in plants and birds. Methods of point counts, mist netting and opportunistic observations were used to survey birds while plants were surveyed using circular plots and opportunistic observations.
